Management Summary:

HIITList offers an automated solution for extracting sprint intervals directly from GPS tracks or HealthKit workouts, eliminating the need for manual start, stop, or lap buttons. This streamlines the process for athletes focusing on high-intensity interval training.

Detailed Overview:

  • If you are a sprinter engaged in interval-based training—such as 12×60 meters or 8×300 meters—conventional methods involving stopwatch buttons or manual phone activation can be disruptive and impede performance. HIITList provides a seamless alternative: simply power your watch and initiate HIIT. Upon completion, the app automatically analyzes your session.
  • From version 2.0 onward, users can record workouts directly via their iOS devices. However, continuous GPS tracking in the background may significantly impact battery life.

Features:

  • Customizable interval tracking: define specific distances (e.g., 60m, 120m, 150m, 300m) with configurable parameters such as minimum start speed to prevent false detections from flying starts, minimum elevation change, and minimum speed thresholds for interval recognition.
  • Import GPX or TCX files from iCloud Drive, internet sources, or email attachments. The app scans these files to detect and analyze intervals.
  • Record training sessions directly using an iOS device.
  • Performance visualization: review results by individual training sessions or by specific intervals.
  • Interactive graphs and mapping features enhance data interpretation and analysis.

Warnings:

  • This version has been tested predominantly with GPS devices recording at one-second intervals. Devices utilizing smart recording may yield inaccurate results; support for these devices is planned for future releases.
  • HIITList relies on GPS coordinates; therefore, indoor workouts are not supported at this time.
  • The current implementation exclusively supports metric units, aligning with standard athletics track measurements and Olympic distances. Support for miles may be added upon user request.
  • Speed metrics are presented in kilometers per hour (km/hr). Conversion to min/km is not currently available but may be considered based on user demand.
  • Accurate differentiation between flat courses and hilly terrain requires a GPS device equipped with a barometric altimeter. When using devices without such capabilities, define intervals with a maximum ascent/descent threshold of at least +10 meters to account for elevation changes.
  • GPS accuracy inherently includes an error margin of several meters. Additionally, one-second recording intervals may result in missed or slightly imprecise start times; users should interpret timing data accordingly. For reference, electronically timed races (e.g., 100m in 13.68s) have been estimated at 13.76s using HIITList; likewise, a 200m race timed electronically at 27.38s was estimated at 26.83s. All tests were conducted with a Garmin Forerunner 610. Additional examples are available at https://hiitlistapp.wordpress.com/.
